Rashid Sayed: For some of our users who are not quite exposed to grand strategy games such as these, can you please shed some light on the Europa Universalis franchise and why some PC gamers swear by it?Ĭhris King: Europa Universalis is a game about building your empire through trade, exploration, diplomacy and warfare during the age of discovery. We have tons of new information in this massive interview including how nation building will work, improvements in AI, accessibility, economic system and whether the franchise will ever make it’s way to consoles. The DLC just makes it easier to deal with the endless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this game will throw at you from time to time.Ĭivilisation is basically the arcade version of EU4.We recently got a chance to meet up with Chris King, Game Designer, Paradox Development Studio and we talked about the upcoming, the grand daddy of all strategy games: Europa Universalis IV. What you pick is what you keep for the end of the game (base game). Tech ideas in Eu4 are very similar to the religious traits in Civ V. In Civ V you could lone wolf it and still win, but in EU4 maintaining good relations with everyone from your neighbours to the Pope (if your religion is Catholic) really helps in staving off those nation killer wars. Naval warfare is easier in EU4 than it is in Civ V.Īlliances matter more in EU4 than it does in Civ V. When it comes to fighting wars the best advice I can give you is to just focus on capturing fortified provinces and the enemy’s capital. You get all of what EU4 has to offer by playing Castille such as colonial wars, border conflicts, personal unions, vassals, and diplomacy. In terms of game play I suggest picking Castille and trying to grow a large colonial empire.

There are some mods out there in the Workshop that will make the font more readable like the Stellaris UI Font and the Stellaris UI Font – Large Tooltips.

A lot of your time will be spent on figuring out the UI which in my opinion is needlessly complex compared to Civ V. You are just like me in that you are migrating from Civ V and this is your first Paradox game. I have spent 1967 hours playing EU4 since I first bought it last year in February and I feel like I barely scratched the surface. You might get everything you want out that play through before you hit the final year of the game, which I think is 1825 (correct me on that one). There is a lot to do in EU4 such as achievement hunting, global conquest, and historical borders.

The time it takes to finish a full EU4 is completely dependent on your own personal goals. You just bought EU4 and CIV 6 and are wondering which one to start first? I think Civ6 is much easier to learn, as the EU4 lacks good tutorial and you mostly learn by trying out stuff or googling. I tried Civ6 a little but it felt way too simple and looked way too cartoonish for my liking.

I imagine if you really rush on Speed 5 you can do it faster.Īs about the Civ6 vs EU4, you are asking the question in EU4 so people hanging around here are playing EU4. I would say perhaps 50 hours to do full run from 1444 to 1821 but I very rarely do that as the game usually becomes boring after you reach dominant size. Plus, you should be spending most of your game time while Paused so you can spend several hours planning your next move or trying to figure out best way to improve economy without ever advancing the time. It takes usually 100+ hours just to learn the basics while being constantly crushed by AI. it depends on the difficulty settings and how well you know the game already.
